When I visited my grandmother’s grave in Cambodia, I was comforted to see these yellow butterflies floating around it. My mom had told me that yellow was her favorite color, and it made me happy to feel like she wasn’t alone. The butterflies made everything seem peaceful and bright.
I read a blog today from a friend who recently visited Cambodia as well. He had a similar experience with these yellow butterflies when he visited the infamous Killing Fields - where thousands of innocent people were brutally executed. He mentioned this to his Cambodian guide who, “responded by reminding me that the butterflies were once ta-coew, a word in Cambodian which means caterpillars as well as worms and maggots”.
He meant - no matter how things appear, don’t be lulled into a false sense of security or acceptance. Remember the truth.
